Abstract

R.K.P. Zia: „New Surprises in Driven Systems with Two Species”
Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Blacksburg, USA

Unlike systems in thermal equilibrium, those driven into far-from- equilibrium steady states display many unexpected properties. Even 25 years after the introduction of the driven Ising lattice gas, we continue to be surprised by new phenomena. In this talk, I will focus on a system with two species of particles driven in opposite directions - a system that might model biological motors, colloids in AC driven liquid crystals, and vehicular/pedestrian traffic. After a brief review of the well-established aspects of this model, I will present more recent, and poorly understood, discoveries.
